Nvidia is moving deeper into photonics as artificial intelligence data centers face a harder constraint: energy use and data movement.

The company has built a multibillion-dollar investment pipeline around optical and photonic technologies in recent months. The strategy shows that Nvidia’s AI infrastructure ambitions now extend beyond GPUs. The next stage of growth depends on faster, more efficient ways to move data between chips, servers and data centers.

Nvidia has announced major deals with Lumentum, Coherent, Marvell and Corning. Together, these moves amount to roughly $6.5 billion in optical and photonics-linked commitments. The aim is clear. Nvidia wants to secure the physical infrastructure needed to scale AI systems without allowing power consumption and bandwidth limits to slow the market.

AI growth is becoming an energy problem

The first phase of the AI boom was defined by graphics processors. Nvidia became the central company in that trade because advanced AI models require enormous processing power.

But compute is no longer the only bottleneck. Large AI systems also require high-speed memory, advanced networking, cooling, power supply and reliable connections between thousands of chips.

Photonic technology moves data using light instead of electrical signals. In large data centers, this can reduce energy loss, increase bandwidth and improve system efficiency. Copper cables remain cheaper and widely used, but they become less attractive as AI clusters grow larger and data traffic rises.

For Nvidia, this is not a side investment. It is a way to protect the next phase of AI infrastructure growth.

Nvidia is locking in the supply chain

Nvidia’s recent deals show a broader strategy. The company is not only selling chips into the AI boom. It is also trying to secure the network, optical and manufacturing capacity that will support future AI systems.

The company announced a $2 billion strategic partnership with Lumentum to develop advanced optics technology. It also announced a separate $2 billion investment in Coherent for photonics and optical components.

Nvidia later committed $2 billion to Marvell, a key company in data center connectivity and custom silicon. That deal also supports Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion ecosystem and its broader push into high-performance AI networking.

Corning adds another layer. Nvidia’s $500 million partnership with Corning is focused on expanding optical connectivity capacity in the United States. Corning plans to increase fiber production capacity and build new manufacturing sites.

The message is direct. AI infrastructure is becoming a supply chain competition, not only a chip competition.

Investors are pricing the second AI trade

The market reaction shows how quickly investors are shifting attention beyond GPUs. Shares of optical and photonics-related companies have surged this year as investors look for the next layer of the AI infrastructure buildout.

The logic is simple. If AI data centers keep growing, they will need more than processors. They will need faster interconnects, more efficient data transmission, more fiber and better energy performance.

This is why Nvidia’s photonics strategy matters. It points to a wider investment theme: the physical limits of AI are becoming more visible.

Energy costs, power availability and data movement may decide how fast AI infrastructure can expand over the next decade.

AI infrastructure is moving beyond chips

Nvidia’s photonics investments are not large compared with the company’s overall AI revenue. But strategically, they are important.

They show that Nvidia is preparing for a market where the main constraint is no longer only GPU supply. The new constraint is system efficiency.

AI data centers need to move huge volumes of information with less power. Photonics can help solve that problem, especially as AI clusters become larger and more complex.

The timeline will not be immediate. Wider adoption of photonic technologies in AI infrastructure is expected to accelerate after 2028. But Nvidia is not waiting for that market to mature. It is positioning itself early.
