Apple has been developing AI glasses for quite a while, but Apple will not release them this year; the company has delayed the launch until next year.

A more affordable, lighter variation of the Apple Vision Pro, called Vision Air, could arrive as early as 2028 or possibly 2029. That model aims to broaden Apple’s headset lineup with a less expensive, less bulky alternative that appeals to everyday wearers.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports: “There have been some challenges on Apple’s road to becoming a leader in eyewear. Initially, the goal was to unveil its smart glasses, known by the code name N50, at the close of 2026, with the aim to deliver them by early 2027. However, as frequently occurs with significant new products from Apple, delays have happened. The company is now aiming to introduce the glasses by the end of next year, according to what I’ve heard.”

Siri is still expected to launch before the year ends, but a bigger concern is that Apple’s visual AI may not meet expectations by then. Apple prefers to avoid shipping a product customers will find unappealing and appears willing to push timelines until the underlying visual intelligence reaches its standards.

Apple may do what it does best: ship a product that isn’t revolutionary at first but becomes the market leader over time. Early eyewear reportedly will emphasize distinctive design touches, oval cameras, bold color options, and several frame styles, to give it broader consumer appeal from day one. Over successive generations, Apple envisions the glasses evolving into a health-focused wearable that also layers augmented-reality features to assist vision and deliver new experiences.

Apple’s Intention

Apple views the eyewear market as a substantial opportunity and aims to attract billions who wear prescription lenses, sunglasses, or glasses as a style choice. Given that scope, it makes sense to take extra time to refine hardware, software, and visual-AI capabilities.

Current progress suggests Apple plans a product positioned similarly to the Apple Watch: a comfortable, everyday wearable with a strong emphasis on health and long-term ecosystem integration.
