Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot AI is preparing for a potential Hong Kong initial public offering as rapid revenue growth and surging demand for its newly launched Kimi K3 model strengthen its position in China’s increasingly crowded AI market.

The Beijing-based company has begun seeking shareholder approval for the listing, according to Bloomberg. The IPO could be completed in six months at the earliest, although discussions remain preliminary and the timetable may change.

Moonshot is also reportedly close to completing a new funding round at a valuation of more than $30 billion. The figure represents the company’s expected private-market valuation rather than the amount it plans to raise through the proposed IPO.

Moonshot’s annual revenue reached $300 million

The IPO preparations follow a sharp increase in Moonshot’s annual recurring revenue, which rose from approximately $200 million in April to $300 million in June.

That growth occurred before the launch of Kimi K3 and should therefore be viewed separately from the surge in demand generated by the new model. Together, however, the company’s expanding revenue base and the early response to K3 have strengthened Moonshot’s appeal to investors.

Goldman Sachs and China International Capital Corporation have reportedly held discussions with the company about the proposed listing. Moonshot is also working to unwind parts of its existing offshore corporate structure as it prepares for a possible offering in Hong Kong.

Founded in 2023 by artificial intelligence researcher Yang Zhilin, Moonshot has become one of China’s most closely watched AI startups. It competes with domestic developers including DeepSeek, Alibaba’s Qwen, MiniMax and Zhipu AI, while also attempting to challenge models produced by major US companies.

Kimi K3 triggered a surge in subscriptions

Moonshot launched Kimi K3 in July as its latest flagship artificial intelligence model.

The company says K3 contains 2.8 trillion parameters, supports a context window of up to one million tokens and can process both text and visual information. Moonshot describes it as the world’s largest open-weight AI model by parameter count.

Open-weight models allow developers to download and run the underlying model parameters under specified licensing conditions. They can provide businesses and researchers with greater control than AI systems available only through closed commercial platforms.

Kimi K3 was designed for coding, reasoning, research and autonomous agent tasks. Moonshot says the model performs competitively against leading systems developed by OpenAI and Anthropic, although such comparisons depend heavily on the benchmarks and testing methods used.

Demand quickly exceeded the company’s projections. Moonshot said activity during a 48-hour period pushed its computing clusters close to their operational limits, forcing it to temporarily suspend new consumer subscriptions.

Existing paying customers were given priority while the company worked to expand capacity.

Computing power remains a major constraint

The subscription pause shows that strong demand alone does not guarantee that an AI company can scale its services smoothly.

Running large models for millions of users requires extensive computing infrastructure and access to advanced processors. Chinese AI developers face additional pressure because US export restrictions have limited their access to some of Nvidia’s most powerful chips.

Moonshot’s ability to handle rising demand will therefore depend not only on the performance of Kimi K3, but also on whether it can secure enough computing power to support continued growth.

A Hong Kong listing could provide additional capital for processors, data centers and future model development. It would also offer investors a clearer test of whether one of China’s fastest-growing AI startups can turn technical momentum into a sustainable international business.
